DISTRICT AND CSEA AGREE TO FOUR-DAY SUMMER WORKWEEK

CSEA and the district have again agreed to implement a four-day, ten-hour workweek schedule for summer 2008. The schedule will begin the week of Monday, June 2, and employees will return to their normal five-day, eight-hour workweek on Monday, August 11. The July 4th holiday will be taken on Thursday, July 3 and employees will receive eight hours of holiday pay.

For exemptions to the schedule, please see your immediate management supervisor.
TWO PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES ON CAMPUS TO DISCUSS ISSUES AFFECTING DISABLED
The Fullerton College Campus Diversity Committee, in conjunction with NOCCCD Staff Development, is again sponsoring a presentation by former professional surfer Jesse Billauer. The presentation, entitled Overcoming Adversity, will take place next Wednesday, April 30 at 12 noon in the Campus Theatre. Billauer suffered a spinal cord injury in his teens and inspires audiences to realize that there is more to life than most people believe.

Following the presentation, there will be a training led by Tara Llanes, a former professional athlete who also suffered a spinal cord injury. The training, designed to facilitate a better understanding of the access and other issues surrounding disabled persons, will take place at 3 pm in room 224.
FACULTY FLEX CONTRACT FORMS DUE NO LATER THAN NEXT FRIDAY
Last week, all full-time faculty should have received a copy of the Faculty Flex Contract 2007 in their campus mailbox. The document outlines the policies involved regarding flex credit and includes a form due no later than Friday, May 9.

The purpose of the flexible calendar is to provide time for faculty to participate in development activities that are related to "staff, student, and instructional improvement." Since the flexible calendar program removes time from the instructional program, it is a reasonable expectation that use of this time should foster instructional improvement.

If you have any questions about specific activities and whether they qualify for FLEX credit, please contact Interim Staff Development Coordinator, Brandon Floerke. Extension 27036 or bfloerke@fullcoll.edu
CLASSIFIED SENATE HOLDING THIRD ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE
The Fullerton College Classified Senate is hosting its third Annual Classified Open House event on Thursday, May 1 from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm in the College Center. All classified staff members are encouraged to attend the event and celebrate comradeship. Lunch will be served and prizes will be available. Schools First Credit Union will be available and Terry Chambers from the District Benefits Office will be on hand to answer questions.
STAFF AND STUDENTS ENCOURAGED TO WRITE LEGISLATORS IN SUPPORT OF EDUCATION
All students, faculty, and staff members are invited to make their voices heard during  Orange County Higher Education Capitol Day on May 8.  This special event is being planned to emphasize the importance of higher education during this difficult economic time in our state's history.  The main message is: Higher education is a solution!

Letters to legislators are being collected throughout all of the county's public community colleges and universities to be delivered in Sacramento by chancellors, presidents, and other leaders -- along with the help of many of our collegiate mascots.

Letters in the North Orange County Community College District (NOCCCD) are being collected in the Public Affairs Office, Anaheim Campus, 9th Floor.  Letters also may be e-mailed to Melissa Utsuki or Christie Wallace Noring in the Public Affairs Office at mutsuki@nocccd.edu or cwallacenoring@nocccd.edu

A template letter is attached.  People interested in submitting letters may use part or all of this template, or they may create their own separate letters. Letters received by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, in the NOCCCD Public Affairs Office will be included in the delivery to Sacramento the next day.

The Orange County Public Education Partnership is planning the May 8 Capitol Day.  Members are California State University, Fullerton; Coast Community College District; North Orange County Community College District; Rancho Santiago Community College District; South Orange County Community College District; and University of California, Irvine.
DONATIONS NEEDED FOR ANNUAL STUDENT PARENTS RECOGNITION LUNCHEON

The CalWORKs and CARE programs are preparing for their Annual Student Parents Recognition Luncheon, which will be held on Friday, May 9at 11:00 am in the College Center.  Each year, the luncheon recognizes the successes as well as the obstacles these students overcome in their quest to achieve self-sufficiency and create a brighter future for their children.

In the past, though the generosity of the Fullerton College community, students in attendance received a $15 gift certificate to Target.  This year, event organizers are hoping to raise enough money to purchase gift certificates for 50 students. Your tax-deductible donations are appreciated, and may be forwarded to Cecilia Alvarado in EOPS. Please make checks payable to "Fullerton College."

TEACHER PREPRATION PROGRAM AWARDED EDUCATION PATHWAYS GRANT

The Fullerton and Cypress College Teacher Preparation programs will be partnering with North Orange County ROP Anaheim Union High School District in the Education Pathways Initiatives grant project with the James Irvine Foundation.  The focus of the grant is to recruit more high school students into college pathways that result in teaching and related careers through dual enrollment/special admit status.

High school students currently involved with the ROP high school Careers with Children program will enroll as special admit college students in the Cypress College Careers in Teaching. COUN110 or Fullerton College Teaching As a Career COUN110.  A course section will be offered each semester at one of three Anaheim high schools.  Initially, it will be offered at Magnolia High School in the fall taught by an adjunct Cypress College instructor. Thegrant funds will pay for the adjunct course instructor and books.

Students will also have fieldtrips to Cypress and Fullerton Colleges.  In June, 130 ROP students will visit each college.  Tours will be conducted and presentations will be given by representatives from key campus programs and services.
