College has
gone the high-scoring route this season, as well as the low-scoring
route. The Hornets much prefer the former and have Kenny Turner to
thank.
Fullerton fashioned its sixth 30-point game of the season and posted
a 30-17 National Southern Conference victory over Grossmont of El Cajon
on Saturday at Fullerton High.
Turner rushed 15 times for 153 yards and touchdown runs of 39 and 29
yards. Fullerton (6-1, 2-0), ranked ninth in Southern California, is the
only unbeaten team in conference play. Fourth-ranked Grossmont is 6-1
and 2-1.
Turner provided the night’s biggest moment on the final play of the
first half. With eight seconds left, the smart move would have been to
head to the sidelines and set up a field goal, but the freshman would
have none of it on a draw play tailor-made for the highlight reel.
“He found a lane and he took it,” second-year coach Tim Byrnes said.
“Unbelievable. A great play, a great player.”
Turner kept churning and spinning up the sideline and scored as time
expired on a 39-yard run even though he was hit twice inside the 10.
That gave Fullerton a 17-10 lead and, despite a first half malaise,
the Hornets never looked back. They added a touchdown in the third
quarter on a 25-yard pass from Darius Banks to Justin Dunford to go
ahead, 23-10.
Turner added a 29-yard score on the first play of the fourth quarter
to put the game away, 30-10.
The Hornets built a 10-0 lead on 35-yard field goal by Jake Tyler and
a 23-yard pass from Matthew Heady to Dunford on a fake FG.
Palomar 4 1, Santa Ana 27:
The visiting Dons (3-4, 0-3) were outscored, 31-10, in the first half as
Palomar (6-1, 2-1) quarterback Matt Christian threw two touchdown passes
in a National Conference Southern Division game at Chuck Embrey Field.
Santa Ana’s Julius Macharia caught five passes for 82 yards and a
touchdown in the loss.
