One time Hornet
standout Andre Smith takes over the reigns of the
Fullerton College men’s basketball team, officials announced this week.
FC’s new head coach Andre Smith played for the Hornets in the early
1980’s under Roger See and FC Hall of Famer Ezra Van Horn.
For the past three years, Smith was the assistant coach for FC helping
the Hornets to an overall record of 60-34 and two conference titles. Now
as the head coach, Smith looks to continue the winning tradition.
“It’s a good feeling, you know. I take great pride in the fact that
I played here, and now I can carry on that winning tradition,” he said.
As a player, Smith was named the team MVP scoring 508 points during
the 1981-82 season. From there, he played for Southern California
College where he was voted the team MVP, All-League, and All-District.
After college, Smith then went on to play professionally overseas
from 1985-1992.
Smith’s coaching career began at San Bernardino High School as an
assistant coach in 1994. He helped guide his teams to the CIF playoffs
in 1994 and 1998. In 1998 Andre accepted the head coaching job at Perris
High, taking his teams to the CIF playoffs every year until he left in
2001.
From 2001-04, Smith served as the head coach for the A.B.A Los
Angeles Stars and then the Los Angeles Aftershock. Smith was also the
associate head coach at Riverside College from 2004-06.
